Manhattan - City in My Memory
After I read the article “Is New York Worth a Trip? Oui”, I could not help but think about those days I lived in NYC.
Most of my friends who visited the City did not have a good feeling about it. Because it is dirty and chaotic at the first glance. Everything is so close to each other. But if they get a chance to stay one or two months, I guarantee you that they would fall in love with the city. It is so much similar to my home town.
Yes, it is dirty if you compared to other big cities. But with such a big population working and living in a small island, you have to consider the City did a good job. And you can tell the conditions are improving.
Yes, everything is close to each other. I used to joke about how close each table in NYC restaurants. You can hear the next table talking so clearly. Whenever I went to a new restaurant, I could not decide which dishes to order. I can’t help but listening to the “neighbors” orderings. That would give me a hint what’s popular in the menu. (
Also, just due to this closeness, it is so convenient to do anything. You don’t need the car living in the city which it is impossible if you live outside the city. Take the subway and bus, you can literally going anywhere in the city, including some areas in the boroughs outside Manhattan.
NYC is really the city never sleeps. Even during the Christmas time, you will not feel lonely if you have nowhere to go but stay in the city. It is quieter than normal, but the lights are so colorful and bright. There are people walking in the street, just like you. I remember I went to see “Christmas Spectaculars” in Radio City a couple days before Christmas. After the show was done, it was close to 12:00pm. But there were people walking in the street, couples lovely cuddled each other; children hung around with parents. It was warm consider it was December already. Orange theme lights were all over trees and buildings. There was a first snow of that year at that night. The normal sharp lights had such soft, cozy glow under the powder of snow. I could not resist such a wonderful holiday spirit; I decided to walk from Radio City which is in midtown all the way home. Enveloped by this quiet and warm night, I experienced a supper peaceful and delight night. Though I walked by myself and would be home by myself, that lonely feelings never touched me that night.
Talking about the restaurants, I just love the atmosphere the City provides. You have so many choices within a walking distance. I used to live in Upper Eastside. It was those days I grew into appreciating different cuisines that are not Chinese. I thought we, Chinese has very sophisticated food culture. Until I lived in the City, I realized that the world is really BIG!
I also started to learn how to appreciate wine and spirit. I was not a night drinker, or to be precisely, never being a drinker. However, I loved to sit in the bar with a glass of tropical drink and did the people watching. There were many pretty girls and handsome boys in the City. I took it for granted until the day I moved out of the City. Only then the real life pictures connected with the media that majority American are overweighed. You hardly can find anyone in the streets of Manhattan.
Man, I just miss that City…
